ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Western Washington University had a three-game winning streak snapped as it fell 2-1 to Central Washington University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Thursday afternoon at the CWU Soccer Field.
The Vikings, who also had an eight-game series unbeaten string (6-0-2) broken, fell to 6-4-2 overall and 5-3-0 league. They entered the match having won five of their last six games.
Central improved to 6-3-3 overall and 5-2-1 in GNAC play. The Wildcats are 4-1-1 in their last six games.
Carson McKole scored Central's game-winning goal in the 77th minute, getting a cross from Danielle Brandli. It was McKole's team-leading sixth goal of the campaign.
Central opened the scoring in the 17th minute on a shot from five yards out by Alex Jensen. Credited with an assist was Brittany Franks.
Western, which had a 19-12 shot advantage, tied the game at 1-1 in the 69th minute as two reserves combined for the score. Brina Sych (So., Vancouver/Union) found the net on the header off a scramble with an assist going to Kristin Maris (So., Issaquah).
"Brianna Jones (Fr., Bonney Lake) was fantastic in the back," said Western coach Travis Connell (9th year). "She thwarted many attacks from Central and was probably our strongest player on the day."
Central goalkeeper Kayla Lipston made seven saves.
The Vikings are on the road Saturday (4 p.m.), meeting nationally No.14-ranked and league-leading Seattle Pacific in a GNAC counter at Interbay Stadium.
