BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Emily Frankland (Sr., Sammamish/Skyline) scored an early goal that proved to be the difference as Western Washington University blanked Simon Fraser University, 1-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Wednesday at the Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
It was the third straight win for the Vikings, who have won five of their last six games. They improved to 6-3-2 overall and 5-2-0 in conference action.
Simon Fraser, which lost its seventh straight, fell to 1-8-0 overall and 0-7-0 in GNAC play.
The Vikings started quickly, earning a corner kick and getting their first shot in the opening minute. The early pressure continued and eventually paid off in the eighth minute, when Justina MacDowell (Bellevue/Sammamish) played a through ball to Frankland, who finished from 12 yards out for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
"We asked them to get off to a quick start, to apply a lot of pressure," said Western coach Travis Connell (9th year), who got his 98th victory. "It paid off in a goal, and that ended up being the winning goal."
Western had a 15-0 shot advantage in the first half and a 27-2 margin for the game. Simon Fraser didn't have a shot until the final 15 minutes. The Clan did have a good chance to score with 10 minutes left, when Ali Trenter got through on a breakaway, but Western defender Emily Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley) recovered to break up the threat in the penalty area.
WWU goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs (Jr., Richland) made one save in picking up her sixth shutout of the season. Amelia Ng had six saves for Simon Fraser.
The Vikings do not compete again until Thursday, Oct. 13 (4 p.m.), when they travel to Central Washington for a GNAC counter.
