BURNABY, B.C. - A first-half goal by midfielder Justina MacDowell (Sr., Bellevue/Sammamish) stood up as Western Washington University blanked Simon Fraser University, 1-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Friday at Terry Fox Field.
The Vikings finished their season 10-5-3 overall and tied for second in the GNAC at 9-4-1. They were unbeaten in their last five games (4-0-1), not allowing a goal during that span.
Simon Fraser ended its campaign 2-12-2 overall and 1-11-2 in league action.
MacDowell found the net from five yards in the 37th minute. The goal was MacDowell's fourth of the season and her third game winner. Joana Houplin (Jr., Olympian) was credited with her team-leading fourth assist.
Goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs (Jr., Richland) was credited with one save in recording her GNAC-leading 11th shutout. She finished the season with a scoreless streak to 476 minutes and 43 seconds.
Arthurs ranks second among WWU career leaders in shutouts with 23.
The Vikings dominated play with a 23-4 shot advantage and had all five corner kicks.
Seven seniors played in their final game for WWU. They were MacDowell, Megan Chapin (Seattle/Garfield), Kelly Cates (Poulsb/North Kitsap), Emily Frankland (Sammamish/Skyline), Katie Griffith (Burlington/Burlington-Edison), Alicia Patten (Seattle/Holy Names Academy) and Emily Warman (Sedro-Woolley).
WWU trails 15-16-3 in its series with Simon Fraser, but the Vikings are unbeaten (4-0-2) in the last six meetings.
