MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Washington University fell behind for the first time this season and despite a furious attack in the closing minutes suffered its first loss of the season, being upset 1-0 by Western Oregon University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Saturday at the WOU Soccer Field.

The Vikings, ranked No.2 nationally for the fourth straight week in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, fell to 12-1-0 overall and 9-1-0 in GNAC action. They outshot the Wolves, 18-2, and had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

WOU freshman Mariah Konyn scored the game's only goal, the first of her collegiate career, on a rebound of a deflection and block from 15 yards that found the upper right hand corner of the net. That came in the 44th minute as WOU improved to 8-2-4 overall and 6-2-2 in conference play.

The Wolves ran their unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2) and upped their school-record shutout total to 10 as goalkeeper Amanda Rose Johnson made six saves with her eighth whitewash of the campaign. She has allowed just four goals this season.

The loss snapped a 15-game series winning streak for WWU, which suffered just its sixth loss in 33 games with WOU.

"In the end it came down to a free kick and that's usually what decides a game like this against a team that was well prepared and well coached," said WWU head coach Travis Connell (11th year, 133-60-19).

"We didn't do a lot of things wrong today. We could have been a little sharper, but when you have 18 shots and 10 corner kicks and don't score ... We played the last 20 minutes in their penalty area. We had free kicks, corner kicks, and the goalkeeper made a couple of great saves when we were able to get the rebounds."

The 12-0-0 start was WWU's best since winning its first 14 games in 1984. The Vikings have outscored the opposition, 34-5, this season.

WWU returns home to face Montana State Billings on Thursday, Oct. 24 (3 p.m.), for a GNAC counter.
