BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Middle blocker Kayla Erickson (Sr., Gig Harbor/Peninsula) had a match-high 17 kills on .654 hitting and libero Samantha Hutchinson (Sr., University Place/Curtis) contributed a match-high 17 digs as Western Washington University swept Saint Martin's University, 25-17, 25-9, 25-14, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match on Thursday, Nov.6, at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
The Vikings, rated No.14 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll, improved to 18-6 overall and 11-4 in GNAC play. They hit a season-high .458 as a team in a match that took just 1:12 to complete.
Saint Martin's, which lost its 11th straight match, fell to 4-23 overall and 1-14 in GNAC play. The Saints led only once, that early in the third set.
WWU never trailed in the first two sets, going out to leads of 10-3 and 14-3, respectively. With the third set tied at 4-4, the Vikings closed out the match with a 21-10 run.
Erickson had six kills in the first set, five in the second and six in the third. Rachel Roeder (Jr., Sammamish/Issaquah) added 10 kills for WWU, Kelsey Moore (Sr., Bellevue/Newport) nine and Joellee Buckner (R-Fr., Colville) eight.
WWU is now 8-1 at home this season and since Diane Flick (15th year, 314-84) took over as head coach in 2000, the Vikings are 127-15 at Carver Gym (.894).
WWU entertains Western Oregon University on Saturday, Nov. 8 (7 p.m.), in a GNAC counter. It will be Senior Night with five Vikings playing in their last match at Carver Gym.
