Samantha Hutchinson (Sr., University Place/Curtis) became just the second player in school history to record 2,000 career digs as she had a match-high 27, lifting nationally ranked Western Washington University to a 25-22, 25-19, 25-13, victory over Simon Fraser University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
The contest ended a three-match home stand for the Vikings, rated No.10 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll, who improved to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
Middle blocker Kayla Erickson (Sr., Gig Harbor/Peninsula) had a match-high 17 kills for WWU.
SFU fell to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in GNAC play. The Clan, which had won three of its last four matches, got eight kills and 13 digs from Kelsey Robinson with Devon May contributing 11 kills and Alison McKay 19 digs.
Hutchinson, who upped her four-year dig total to 2,005, trails only WWU career record holder Courtney Schneider, who had 2,695 from 2004 to 2007. The All-American senior entered the match leading the nation in digs per set with an average of 6.98.
WWU broke open the first set by scoring five straight points for a 15-11 lead. The Vikings never trailed in the second and third sets, ending the match with a 16-4 run.
WWU next goes on the road for a pair of conference matches, traveling to Seattle Pacific on Thursday, Sept. 25 (7 p.m.) and Montana State Billings on Saturday, Sept. 27 (7 p.m.).
