Oct. 3, 2016 BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University sophomore outside hitter Abby Phelps has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Volleyball Player of the Week for September 26-October 2.
Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) led the Vikings to a 2-0 record last week recording road victories at Concordia (3-0) and Western Oregon (3-2). The 2015 GNAC Freshman of the Year averaged 3.38 kills per game and 3.62 digs per game, and overall scored a team-high 33.5 points to receive the first GNAC weekly award of her career.
For the season Phelps is tied for the GNAC lead with 10 double-doubles (with SPU's Gabby Oddo), and is also listed amongst GNAC leaders in Kills/Set (7th, 3.25), Points/Set (8th, 3.74) and Digs/Set (9th, 4.12).
"Abby did a good job of working hard to put herself in a position to hit multiple shots," said head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "It was more about her preparation than her actual swings, and that is something she has been working real hard at."
The Vikings (8-6 overall, 4-2 GNAC) return home to Bellingham this week to host Central Washington on Thursday (7 pm) and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday (7 pm). Both matches will be played at Whatcom Pavilion on the Whatcom Community College campus (6.8 miles from Western's campus) as Carver Gym's two-year renovation nears its completion.
