BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University women's soccer team opened exhibition play with a 4-2 loss to the University of Fraser Valley Wednesday evening at Harrington Field.

The game does not count towards the 2016 season record or statistics. The Vikings opened training camp Monday and played today's game with only two days of practice under their belt.

Western took an early 1-0 lead off a penalty kick by senior forward Elise Aylward (Renton, WA/Lindbergh) at the 12:18 mark.

Fraser Valley scored the equalizer near the midpoint of the half on a putback by midfielder Brittany Zacharuk. The Cascades then scored three goals over a four-minute stretch to take a 4-1 lead late in the first half.

Sophomore Gabriela Pelogi (Federal Way, WA) cut the lead to 4-2 with an early second-half goal with assists by freshman forward Peyton Chick (Renton, WA/Kentridge) and junior midfielder Emily Webster (Bellingham, WA/Sehome).

The Vikings goalkeeper tandem of Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA/College of Saint Rose) and Hillary O'Connor (Los Angeles, CA/The Archer School) combined to keep the Cascades off the scoreboard in the second half. WWU out-shot Fraser Valley 10-4 in the second half, but could not complete the comeback.

The Vikings return to action with their second of three exhibition matches next Tuesday at Trinity Western in Langley, British Columbia (7 pm). The regular season opens September 1 with a road contest at No. 24 Sonoma State.
