VICTORIA, B.C. - The Western Washington University women's soccer team closed out the preseason with a 2-1 victory over the University of Victoria Friday afternoon in a cross-border friendly at Centennial Stadium.
WWU freshmen forwards Jordyn Bartelson (Puyallup, WA) and Lindsey Fujiwara (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) paced the Vikings attack scoring both goals, while junior Emily Webster (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) recorded an assist. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA/College of Saint Rose) recorded a pair of saves in the victory.
Trailed 1-0, Bartelson scored the equalizer on a corner kick from Webster. After maintaining pressure for a solid five minutes and earning themselves chance after chance the breakthrough finally came for Western. A beautifully whipped-in corner by Webster found the head of an unmarked Bartelson who made no mistake in heading it home to tie the game 1-1.
The Vikings jumped ahead in the 61st minute when Fujiwara found herself in just a little bit of space at the edge of the 18 yard-box and unleashed a shot that UVic goalkeeper Puck Louwes had no chance to stop. The ball struck the underside of the cross-bar before bouncing across the goal line for the game-winner.
WWU officially opens the 2016 season on Thursday, September 1 at No. 24 Sonoma State. WWU is ranked No. 3 in the preseason National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll.
