BURNABY, B.C. - Western Washington senior forward Elise Aylward scored in the 26th minute and the Viking defense recorded its seventh shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Simon Fraser Saturday afternoon at Terry Fox Field.
WWU improved to 7-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in GNAC play with the victory. Simon Fraser falls to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action.
Aylward (Renton, WA/Lindbergh) scored a goal in her third consecutive game and is now tied for the team lead with Gabriela Pelogi (Federal Way, WA) with three goals on the season. Pelogi was credited with the assist on the play after racing down the left wing, and delivered a low cross into the box that Aylward directed into the goal with her chest for her 16th career goal.
The Western defense proved stingy once again allowing only 10 shots and 3 shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA/College of Saint Rose) recorded 3 saves while logging her sixth individual shutout of the season.
The Vikings (7-0-1, 2-0-0 GNAC) return to action with a pair of GNAC home games next week. WWU hosts Saint Martin's on Thursday (Sept. 29, 7 pm) and Concordia on Saturday (Oct. 1, 1 pm) at Harrington Field.
Game Notes: WWU is undefeated in its last 32 GNAC regular-season matches (28-0-4)...WWU was last undefeated after the first eight games of the season in 2014 when the team was undefeated in the first 20 games of the season...Aylward scored her 16th career goal and has 45 career points.
