BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The No. 9 Western Washington University women's soccer team remained undefeated on the young season with a convincing 2-0 victory over MSU Denver Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Harrington Field.

The Vikings (2-0-1) out-shot dominated the Roadrunners with a 42-2 advantage in shots and 12-1 edge in shots on goal. WWU also had 13 corner kicks compared to MSUD's one.

"I am happy with our mentality today and the way we defended," said 14th-year head coach Travis Connell. "We did a great job of creating chances and kept the pressure on the whole game. We just need to work on the execution a little, but overall I am very pleased with our performance today."

Freshman Liv Larson (Arlington, WA) put the Vikings ahead scoring her second goal of the season in the 24th minute. The forward dribbled through the defense starting at 25-yards out and lined a low shot from 15-feet past MSU Denver goalkeeper Erica Torres.

"We started out strong and fast and had a lot of pressure on them and it just got to me and we got that one in," said Larson. "I think we had good pressure on them all game, started out strong like we wanted to and we kept pressure the whole game and our defense held a tight back line."

WWU maintained the 1-0 lead through almost all of the second half until sophomore Jen Oak (Covington, WA/Tahoma/Whatcom CC) scored in the 90th minute (89:32). The transfer from Whatcom Community College took a feed from the goal line and tapped it in at close range. Redshirt freshman Emily Bunnell (Kirkland, WA/Lake Washington) and freshman Peyton Chick (Renton, WA/Kentridge) were credited with assists on the final goal.

"As a team we just got to keep our minds in the right spot and take it one game at a time and just get shots off," said Oak. "We just need to keep scoring and get good defending, that's important for our team. It (the goal) was a big monkey of my back. I feel like from here on out I'll just get going with the goal scoring."

Junior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA/College of Saint Rose) continued her strong play registering her third clean sheet in as many matches. Homer, who redshirted last season after transferring from the College of Saint Rose in New York, has not allowed a goal in 290 minutes in the net this season.

The Vikings (2-0-1) return to action Saturday hosting Notre Dame de Namur at Harrington Field at 4 pm. The WWU men will host Colorado Christian at 7 pm in Bellingham as part of a Viking soccer doubleheader at Harrington Field.
