• Earned four letters each in football, track and wrestling for Vikings
• Had 30-year career as high school physical educator and coach, 19 at Puyallup High
• Posted 105-9 dual meet record in boys cross country, placing second at state in 1982, third in 1981 and fourth in 1984; and had 81-22 dual meet record in girls cross country
• Posted 77 dual meet victories in track, 50 at Puyallup and 27 at Sehome High
• Western Washington Wrestling Association Official of the Year in 1980 and Puget Sound Official of the Year in 1982
• Helped create Washington State Cultural Exchange Program

 

Jerry Joyce Obituary

Jerry Lloyd Joyce Jerry Lloyd Joyce of Puyallup, born March 3, 1940 in Everett, WA, died April 10, 2004 at U of W Regional Heart Center. Jerry was a graduate of Everett High School and Western Washington University where he competed in track, wrestling and football. He began teaching in Puyallup in 1963 and retired from Puyallup High School after a 30 year career. He coached track and cross country as well as officiating wrestling. Jerry enjoyed accompanying student athletes to several foreign countries as part of the Washington Cultural Exchange program. His many hobbies included travel, photography, golf and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, LaVerne, son, Jade Joyce, of Puyallup, daughter Jody Wickett (Scott) and grandchildren Shelby and Brady of Puyallup, his father, R. Lloyd Joyce of Everett, sister Karen Papin (Allen) of Flagstaff, AZ. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor Joyce and brother Clifford Joyce. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Washington Cultural Exchange or to the U of W Regional Heart Center. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 24th at 10:00 am, Puyallup High School Auditorium.
